Every Naruto fan knows that a shinobi wears a headband with their village’s symbol on it, everyone except for Jiraiya, but if you only watched the anime you might not know the truth behind his head guard and the symbol on it. Let’s start with the symbol itself, which the lettering is the word Abura, which means oil in japanese, but in universe it’s one of the symbols for mount myoboku, the sage region for the toads, a place with its own special oil that allows one to become more attuned with nature energy and can even be found on the elder toad’s necklace. The other reason for Jiraiya wearing this headband is that the guy was a spy, which for someone as tall as jiraiya, he needed to be able to hide in plain sight and wearing a ninja headband with the leaf village logo on it would make him easier to spot. While he is easily identifiable with that white hair and muscular frame, Jiraiya having no open allegiance to a ninja village made it easier to hide in plain sight.
