Stuttgart 21 is the birth of an unprecedented space, a fascinating and inspiring place, whether from the perspective of a civil engineer, an architect or an artist. Like calyxes, the ceiling of the platform hall opens up to the sky. In a natural sweep, the hall's ceiling flows to the ground, forming its own supports. These organic curves were found in amazing experiments with soap skin. The architect of Stuttgart's future main station, Christoph Ingenhoven, explains how engineer Frei Otto found the goblet support shape and how it was further thought out. Angelika Schmid from the Werner Sobek structural engineering office shows how the soap skin shapes are turned into a reinforced concrete hall.

Many thanks to the "Institut für Leichtbau Entwerfen und Konstruieren Universität Stuttgart" and the "saai | Archiv für Architektur und Ingenieurbau am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie" for providing the original photographs of Frei Otto and the photos of the Stuttgart 21 models.

▬ What is the rail project ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The Stuttgart-Ulm rail project comprises the reorganization of the Stuttgart rail junction (Stuttgart 21) and the new Wendlingen-Ulm line. The construction project is the largest expansion concept for public rail transport in Baden-Württemberg since the 19th century.

Stuttgart 21 is the complete reorganization of the Stuttgart rail junction. The joint project was agreed in 2009 with the financing contract between the federal government, the state of Baden-Württemberg, the state capital Stuttgart, the Verband Region Stuttgart, Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH and Deutsche Bahn.

To be built:
- four new stations
- 57 kilometers of new rail tracks that will travel at speeds of up to 250 km/h
- 59 kilometers of tunnels
- 16 tunnels and culverts
- 44 bridges

As part of the upgraded and new Stuttgart-Augsburg line, the new Wendlingen-Ulm line is a further 60-kilometer-long component of Deutsche Bahn's high-speed network and part of the Stuttgart-Ulm rail project.

Being built:
- 60 kilometers of new rail track, which will travel at speeds of up to 250 km/h
- 61 kilometers of tunnel tubes
- 12 tunnels
- 37 bridges
- Merklingen station (complementary to the project)
