India is home to seven species of wild canids—Dhole, Golden Jackal, Indian Wolf, Himalayan Wolf, Indian Fox, Tibetan Sand Fox and Red Fox.
Striped Hyenas are considered a part of this group even though they are not true canids.
1- Dhole (Cuon alpines)
Population Trend: stable
IUCN • endangered
Dholes, also called Asiatic wild dogs, are social carnivores that typically inhabit forests of south and Southeast Asia.
2- Golden Jackal (Canis aureus)
Population Trend: stable
IUCN • least concern
Golden jackal or Indian jackal is the most widespread wild canid in the Indian sub-continent.
Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes)
Population Trend: decreasing
IUCN • Endangered
The Indian wolf inhabits large parts of the Indian peninsula. It is among the smallest wolf sub-species.
Indian wolves are found across semi-arid areas of western, central and southern India.
3- Himalayan wolf (Canis lupus chanco)
Population Trend: Decreasing
IUCN • Vulnerable
Himalayan (also known as Tibetan wolf) wolf is a sub-species of the grey wolf, found in the Himalayas and the Trans-Himalayan region.
4- Bengal fox ( Vulpes bengalensis)
Population Trend: decreasing
IUCN • least concern
The Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis), also known as the Indian fox, is a fox endemic to the Indian subcontinent.
5- Tibetan (sand) fox (Vulpes ferrilata)
Population Trend: ---
IUCN • least concern
Tibetan fox, also called Tibetan sand fox, is the most recent addition to the list of India's wild canids. The species was first reported from India in 2005.
6- Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)
Population Trend: decreasing
IUCN • least concern
In India, there are three sub-species of red fox,
Desert Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla)
Tibetan Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes hoole)
And
Kashmir Hill Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes griffithii)
