Unique footage from 1933 showcasing the household of Mr. J.M. Le Grand (1892-1966) who lived with his family in a luxury modern residence on the Van Heutsz Boulevard (now Jalan Teuku Umar) in the district of New Gondangdia. Mr. Le Grand was director at shipping company K.P.M., and also an amateur cineast. We see all kinds of activities in and around the home, from sports to tea drinking, from gardening to entertaining guests. Also lovely to see the members of the domestic household of the family. The Van Heutsz Boulevard was an upper class street in one of the most prime neighbourhoods in pre-WWII Jakarta. The house of Mr. Le Grand at number 28 was pretty close to the Kunstkring building, and still exists today however it has been left to crumble for many years now. Today's Jalan Teuku Umar is still a very expensive street to live. The house opposite the Le Grand family's residence, at number 9 with the characteristic Mansard roof, does still exist today too, altough in a slightly altered form, and was for sale a few years ago for US$ 35 million (!). What we love about this footage of 1933 is that the Van Heutsz Boulevard was very much dominated by bicycles. We see Mr. Le Grand himself only once in this video, when he plays with the cockatoo.
