Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game. There was a lot of debate about whether the match was soulslike during its pre-release even though Game Science does not consider it soulslike. However, reviewers who played the game commented that, even though the game and soulslike games share a few elements, Black Myth: Wukong is distinct from games belonging to that subgenre. The game is played in single-player mode with a third-person view. It is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West.

The player controls a monkey protagonist, the Destined One, based on Sun Wukong from the novel. The protagonist's weapon is a staff, based on the Ruyi Jingu Bang from the story. The staff can extend and shrink its size. The combat involves three staff stances, which are the smash stance, the pillar stance, and the thrust stance. They provide versatility in the manner of attacks. A focus accumulates by landing light attacks, executing well-timed dodges, and other means. A focus point is gained when the meter for focus is filled up. These points can initiate a varied combo, which takes place during light attacks, or charge a heavy attack on its own. Stamina depletes by sprinting, dodging, and attacking.

Spells are available on cooldown and consume mana. There are four slots to equip these spells.

The protagonist possesses transformations to change himself into a different creature or being. They are available on cooldown but do not cost mana. One of the transformations called the Red Tides takes the shape of Guangzhi, a wolfman who wields a flaming glaive. The transformations come with their own mindset and health. They last until their might, which depletes by attacking, or health runs out.

In addition, the protagonist has spirits, which activate a transformation to do one attack. They can be obtained by absorbing the essence of defeated enemies into a gourd, can be used on cooldown, and can be levelled up. One of the spirits takes the shape of the Wandering Wight, who makes a headbutt attack that can stagger enemies.

The game has a skill tree to upgrade the character.

The game follows a mostly linear progression interspersed with expansive areas. There are shrines, which act as checkpoints for the player, along the way. Throughout the world, the protagonist encounters various yaoguai as enemies. Players cannot change the game's difficulty, but it does not remain the same throughout the playthrough.

Synopsis
Black Myth Wukong is told in six chapters. The Destined One sets out on his journey to retrieve lost relics. It explores themes such as "lifelong regrets, sacrifice, the immutable shaping of one’s fate, and the notion that everyone, heroes and villains alike, might just be seeking redemption or a place in the sun."

It features Buddhist and Daoist philosophy.
