The day of the IT outage "was going to be the busiest day since 2019 for flights from UK airports," says Simon Calder, travel editor at The Independent.

Talking about one passenger who was told by her airline she would only receive a refund for her cancelled flights, Mr Calder said: "It's very clear what the rules are. The airline has to get her to her destination as soon as possible."
