সোমনাথ মন্দির ভারতের একটি প্রসিদ্ধ শিব মন্দির। গুজরাত রাজ্যের পশ্চিম উপকূলে অবস্থিত সৌরাষ্ট্র অঞ্চলের বেরাবলের নিকটস্থ প্রভাস ক্ষেত্রে এই মন্দির অবস্থিত। এটি হিন্দু দেবতা শিবের দ্বাদশ লিঙ্গের মধ্যে পবিত্রতম। সোমনাথ শব্দটির অর্থ “চন্দ্র দেবতার রক্ষাকর্তা”। সোমনাথ মন্দিরটি ‘চিরন্তন পীঠ’ নামে পরিচিত। কারণ অতীতে ছয় বার ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত হলেও মন্দিরটি সত্বর পুনর্নিমিত হয়। ১৯৪৭ সালের নভেম্বর মাসে জুনাগড়ের ভারতভুক্তির সময় এই অঞ্চল পরিদর্শন করে সর্দার বল্লভভাই প্যাটেল বর্তমান মন্দিরটি নির্মাণের পরিকল্পনা করেন। তাঁর মৃত্যুর পর মন্দিরের কাজ এগিয়ে নিয়ে যান ভারত সরকারের অপর এক মন্ত্রী কে. এম. মুন্সি

হিন্দু পুরাণ অনুসারে, দক্ষ প্রজাপতি কর্তৃক অভিশপ্ত হয়ে চন্দ্র প্রভাস তীর্থে শিবের আরাধনা করলে, শিব তাঁর অভিশাপ অংশত নির্মূল করেন। এই কারণে চন্দ্র সোমনাথে শিবের একটি স্বর্ণমন্দির নির্মাণ করেন। পরে রাবণ রৌপ্য ও কৃষ্ণ চন্দনকাষ্ঠ দ্বারা মন্দিরটি পুনর্নিমাণ করেছিলেন বলে বিশ্বাস। একাধিক মুসলিম আক্রমণকারী এবং শাসকদের দ্বারা বারবার ধ্বংসের পরে মন্দিরটি অতীতে বেশ কয়েকবার পুনর্নির্মাণ করা হয়েছিল। উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে এগারো শতকে মাহমুদ গজনভি প্রথম মন্দিরটি আক্রমণ করেন।
