Meditation is the practice of calming yourself and training your brain. Hundreds of studies have shown that meditation changes the physical structure of the brain: making it better at processing information, overcoming fear, relieving pain, and improving overall cognition. There's also a ton of research that suggests that meditation improves general health, and reduces depression, anxiety, and other harmful states of mind by teaching a person to safely sit with unpleasant emotions (both positive and negative)
