I'm not a huge fan of driving, but renting a car and driving is the best way to see a place like Costa Rica. This video walks you through what it's like to rent a car from SJO (San Jose's airport).

Maybe most importantly, I found drivers in Costa Rica (especially outside San Jose) to be very patient and relaxed!
