I woke up this morning with a heavy heart, reflecting on all the events of this past weekend. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, innocent, Jewish blood was shed in Jerusalem.

On Friday, as Shabbat was starting, a gunman waited outside of a synagogue and opened fire. This was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in recent memory, as five people were senselessly killed—declared dead on the scene—and two passed away later at the hospital.

We often get asked, “Why is this happening?” Surely there must be a lot of reasons, but I keep coming back to scripture:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

As we know, antisemitism is not a new hatred. It is an ancient hatred that has continued to rear its ugly head in recent history. The day of this deadly attack was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Every year we take time globally to remember the atrocities of Hitler and the Nazis, and we remember the 6 million Jewish people who lost their lives too soon.

You can read more about this day and its origin in our article here: https://firmisrael.org/learn/remember...

We recognize that again and again this spirit of hatred, filling different people throughout history, desires to wipe out and annihilate the Jewish people. We cry out to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for mercy and reconciliation. In this city where God has promised peace, we contend for peace.
