Edmund Gettier is famous for revolutionising the field of Epistemology (the study of knowledge) in the 20th century. But the story behind this modern philosophical myth turns out to be a bit more muddled than it would appear from the textbooks. In this series The Living Philosophy and Ideas Sleep Furiously begin our exploration of the field of epistemology by unpacking the history and meaning of this peculiar episode in the history of philosophy.
In this episode we talk about Gettier Problems — problems that Edmund Gettier identified in the so-called tripartite theory of knowledge — that knowledge is justified true belief — that is attributed to Plato. Attributing views to Plato is a tricky business at the best of time but in this episode we see that in this case it is unconscionable.
