Lyrics:

In South Dakota’s Black Hills
On land reserved for the Sioux
Stood a granite mount called Rushmore
With a perfect Southeast view

In ’24, the Historical Society’s Doane Robinson
Hired sculptor Gutzon Borglum for a tourist attraction

Gutzon chose faces of four Presidents that would represent
The nation's birth, growth, preservation and development

Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Lincoln, they’d be
October 4th, ‘27, began their destiny

Dynamite, stone drills and chisels, the team would employ
Along with 400 carvers, Borglum and his boy

The heads would be sixty feet tall, this granite monument
They’d cut away whatever didn’t look like a president

As each face was completed, its dedication, they’d do
George was first in ‘34, by ‘39, were through

They planned to carve from the waist up, but funds were running short
They only started George’s coat, but then, had to abort

Sadly, Gutzon passed in May of 1941
The work was finished that October, by Lincoln, his son

14 years, one million dollars was its total cost
And all those men perched on that mountain, not one would be lost

The Shrine of Democracy, the vision Gutzon saw
Nowadays, over two million visitors a year, in awe
