In the realm of investing, a defensive strategy is paramount for stability and resilience in uncertain economic times which can be found in goods and services that have consistent demand in categories such as utilities, healthcare, education, personal care, household goods, and telecommunications. In this video, I discuss two primary strategies when investing in defensive stocks or building a defensive portfolio -- a) an active style of stock picking and b) a passive way of investing

Specific to passively managed approach, the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index is a powerful portfolio that has often outperformed the broader market indices like the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500, and that too with lower volatility. I also put forth in this video a combined strategy i.e. attacking via the Nifty 50 and defending via the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer Index to show how this combination can offer spectacular returns over the long term - 19.9% post tax returns over 17 years
