Good artists copy, great artists steal. Dario Marianelli, the award-winning film composer for "Atonement," showcases a strong classical conservatory-style DNA in his music. The Italian-born Marianelli cannot be considered a plagiarist; he simply masterfully incorporates Beethoven's style into his compositions. His music possesses a certain je ne sais quoi (French: indescribable, enchanting) magic. At first listen, you might think you're hearing a piano concerto or symphony written by Beethoven or Mozart. However, upon a closer examination, you would discover his music has a refreshing and retro self-style, especially in literary-themed films. Today, I want to talk to you about a new classical music master who has emerged from the minimalist music style prevalent in Hollywood, Dario Marianelli, and his skillful use of classical techniques with a fresh twist in films, which earned him an Oscar award.
