Henry Ewing Torbet was born in 1912. Whilst working as an accountant, he decided on a new life path and became a hermit around the 1940s.

Torbet moved into Bennane Cave, later becoming known as Snibs Cave, and this was his home for 30 years!

He was self sufficient....driftwood from the beach for a fire, fish and rabbits to catch and eat, and doing odd jobs for local people. Sadly, a horrific storm in 1983 made the cave uninhabitable. Torbet caught pneumonia and passed 2 days later.

Beloved by the locals, a shrine was built to commemorate him near the cave.

Question is.....could you spend 30 years in a cave?
