One of the more common causes of fires in a home is a buildup of lint in the dryer vent. Fortunately with a little preventative maintenance you can keep yourself safe by clearing the vent annually!

Over 3,000 fires in homes happen every year in the U.S. due to lint sparking fire in a dryer vent. The lint is both flammable, AND there’s a lot of static electricity being generated during the drying cycle. Cleaning the lint trap each time you do laundry is good. But it’s also important to clear your dryer vent of buildup once a year. Otherwise those little bits that get past the trap can continue to build up inside the vent. If your vent exits to the second story or roof (like mine does here), hire a professional to help. It’s not very expensive. Also, if you have a lot of buildup, cleaning that out will help your dryer work better! Your clothes will dry faster, and you’ll save electricity. So whether you live in a house, a condo or an apartment, clean your vent (or have it cleaned) once a year. And if you’re a renter, ask your landlord to do it–particularly if you spot a lot of stray lint behind your dryer!

So that’s the message this Valentine’s Day! I love you as friends and family, and want you to keep yourselves, your families and your fur babies safe this year. Particularly as we get into hotter weather.

Because the LAST thing I want is a phone call from you that you need a new place to live…because your home burned down.
