Identity security is one of the most significant issues facing individuals and businesses. Phishing and identity theft dwarfs ransomware in terms of financial loss and just the sheer number of attacks.  And now the advent of AI-use in political campaigns is magnifying the problem.  Are we making any progress in securing identity for the populations of the world?

Reports of losses resulting from identity theft are all over the map.  The lowest numbers come from the IC3 at $10billion in 2023, the highest come from companies involved in identity access management (estimates as high a $250Billion for 2024).  When you are talking about billions, does it really matter anymore? Isn’’t just the fact that it is rising out of control more of an issue?  Why is it so rampant?

At RSA we talked about the discrepancy between what people claim is their security status and what it actually is.  Whilst we are investing in a lot of tools, most of them are either not being deployed or are just not being used correctly. Would you agree with that?
