Solo and Ensemble - Choosing a Solo

In this video, I'll be taking a break from talking only about trumpet and spending some time talking more generally about how to choose a solo for Solo and Ensemble contest.

I cover two main points in the video. The first point is the most important. We want to choose our music with our ears, not with our eyes. The second point is also important. We want to choose a solo that is just beneath our skill level.

Solo and Ensemble is a music competition for which we want to shine as individuals. It is not like all-region band auditions where we are competing "against" other musicians. We are not judged according to our execution of the solo.

This video is the first of what we hope to become a a series of videos about Solo and Ensemble competition. But we want to hear from you that you are interested enough to justify the time it takes to make one of these videos. We are looking for 100 likes before we start the next video.

The next video in the series will be about preparing your solo! If you want to learn more about better ways to prepare your music, like this video and we will move on to the next one.

I am a trumpet teacher in the Houston area. If you need trumpet lessons, feel free to contact me either here on YouTube, or you can check out my website through the address below.
