Major Sharpe meets Mr. Clarence Shellington, a correspondent from the London Gazette. Wellington assigns Sharpe, under the leadership of Colonel Brand, the task of blowing up a store of gunpowder vital to French General Calvet. To do this, they need the expertise of explosives expert Major Pyecroft, who recently was involved in an accident involving explosives and lost half of his face and a hand.
