महाभारत, अठारह पुराणों, ब्रह्मसूत्र, मीमांसा जैसे अद्वितीय वैदिक साहित्य दर्शन के रचयिता, ऋषि पराशर के पुत्र महर्षि व्यास जी की गणना भगवान श्री हरि विष्णु जी के चौबीस अवतारों में की जाती है। महर्षि व्यास का जन्म त्रेता युग के अन्त में हुआ था। वह पूरे द्वापर युग तक जीवित रहे। कहा जाता है कि महर्षि व्यास ने कलियुग के शुरू होने पर यहां से प्रयाण किया। भगवान राम विष्णु के 17वें अवतार थे | महर्षि व्यास को भगवान विष्णु का 18वां अवतार माना जाता है। ।
वेद व्यास जी का जन्म आषाढ़ मास की पूर्णिमा को हुआ। वेद, उपनिषद और पुराणों का प्रणयन करने वाले वेद व्यासजी को समस्त मानव जाति का गुरु माना जाता है। उनके सम्मान में ही हर वर्ष आषाढ़ शुक्ल पूर्णिमा को गुरु पूर्णिमा और व्यास पूर्णिमा के रूप में मनाया जाता है| गुरु पूर्णिमा के दिन शिष्य अपने गुरु की पूजा करते हैं और उन्हें उपहार देते हैं। बहुत से लोग इस दिन व्यास जी के चित्र का पूजन और उनके द्वारा रचित ग्रंथों का अध्ययन करते हैं। मठों और आश्रमों में लोग ब्रह्मलीन संतों की मूर्ति या समाधी की पूजा करते हैं।
गुरु पूर्णिमा का महत्व,
मानव जाति को चारों वेदों का ज्ञान देने वाले गुरु महर्षि वेद व्यास जी के जन्म तिथि के अवसर पर गुरु पूर्णिमा पर्व को मनाया जाता है. देश में गुरु को माता-पिता से भी परम माना गया है. गुरु ही होते है जो शिष्यों को गलत मार्ग पर चलने से बचाते है. गुरु के बिना जीवन आकल्पनिय है. कुल पुराणों की संख्या 18 है, सभी के रचयिता महर्षि वेदव्यास है.

गुरु पूर्णिमा पूजा विधि
गुरु पूर्णिमा के दिन सुबह उठें, स्नान आदि करके सबसे पहले सूर्य को अर्घ्य दें. सूर्य मंत्र का जाप करें, फिर अपने गुरु का ध्यान करें, इस दिन भागवन विष्णु को जरूर पूजें, उनके अच्युत अनंत गोविंद नाम का 108 बार जाप करना न भूलें, आटे की पंजीरी बनाकर इसका भोग लगाएं. ऐसा करने से परिवार का स्वास्थ्य उत्तम रहता है.
