Andania, Bodysnatchers, Cancellations, Diversions, Excursions & Freight at Carlisle. 30 Sept 2023

The last day of September and my first day back on the station after two weeks overseas.

The weather didn't look too promising so I stuck to the station. Although it stayed mostly dry in Carlisle, that wasn't the case further south.

The ASLEF driver's strike had led to the cancellation of almost all passenger trains apart from the ScotRail services from Dumfries and Glasgow.

So to the ABCDEF.
Andania D213 was en route from Scotland where it had been hauling a private charter. It overnighted in Carlisle's Holding Sidings before heading to Crewe.
Bodysnatchers - the nickname for Class 57s. West Coast were using a pair on the Northern Belle, including 57009 G J Churchward, recently returned to service.
Cancellations. A problem north of Craven Arms where the coupling from a northbound steel coil train from Port Talbot to Shotton was shed and ruptured the fuel tank of a southbound Class 150 with passengers on board. As a result LSL's Lakelander excursion from Hereford was cancelled. Royal Scot never made it to Carlisle or around the coast,
Diversions. LNER were able to run minimal services on the ECML. The line north of Newcastle was closed for planned engineering work and LNER chose to run two return services between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Carlisle.
Excursions. West Coast ran the Northern Belle to Dundee with options for passengers to visit Glamis Castle and Scone Palace. They also ran the Cumbrian Coast Express. Electric hauled to Carlisle behind Les Ross / Peter Pan, steam hauled around the Cumbrian Coast behind Leander on its final run before its Boiler certificate expires and then electric hauled from Carnforth to London.
Freight. Three out of the day's five freights were recorded, including a convoy of four 68s hauling a pair of empty nuclear flasks.

A fun day despite the lack of Avanti, Northern and TransPennine trains!
