In the Texas college town of Huntsville, you’ll find the Sam Houston National Forest. The forest is one of four national forests in Texas. It’s located just 50 miles north of Houston and is made up of over 163,000 acres.

Hiking and camping in the national forest is a big deal, especially since it’s home to the 128 mile long Lone Star Hiking Trail. But don’t try to camp during deer hunting season – since it’s not allowed for the safety of the hikers.

You can also go fishing and boating in many of the lakes – like Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe.

Within the national forest is Sam Houston State Park. This park has many amenities, like camping, fishing, hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, geocaching, birding, and overall enjoying nature.

There is a lot to do here, but my favorite by far is hiking. There’s 21 miles of trails within the park. Along the trail you’ll see wildlife like birds and alligators and, playgrounds, and a nature center.

In the center of the park is Lake Raven. This 210 acres lake allows for boating, fishing, swimming, and all the water activities you love to enjoy in the heat of the summer. There’s even kayak rentals available near Raven Lodge.

If staying overnight interests you, there are 160 campsites ranging from tent sites to screened in shelters. There’s also pavilions and the meeting hall available for rent as well if you have a large group and want to have a central place for everyone to meet.

Gator Junction is the shop on property. If it’s something you’ve forgotten to bring with you, a snack, or a souvenir, you’ll find it there.

The nature center is great for kids and kids at heart alike. There’s exhibits and bird nests and even a junior ranger program. Kids in this program can borrow an explorer pack and complete tasks around the park in order to earn a special badge.
