In this video, How To Pick The Best Trout Lure For Any Situation (BFS Fishing), Hobie-Wan Kenobi talks about the three main styles of minnow lures and briefly how he fishes each one. An in-depth video on each type of trout minnow (Sinking, Suspending and Floating) and how Hobie-Wan Kenobi fishes them is coming soon.

Sinking Minnows: Sinking trout lures, such as the Duo Spearhead Ryuki 50s and Creep Aim 46s, are the most popular minnow style bait for BFS fishing. The heavy weight and slim profile allow for long casting. Being heavy and slim allows the lure to swim easily and true in fast current to make contact with the bottom of the stream.

I have been using the Kanna 48s (review video coming soon) by the new company Indigo Trout a lot the last few weeks. The square bill deflects off cover great and also prevent a lot of snags. The lure also falls in a horizontal position and can be fished in a ripping motion to catch fish in deep pools.

Suspending Minnows: Suspending trout lures shine when a natural presentation is needed. The ability of the suspending lure to stay in the strike zone longer allow inactive fish the opportunity to grab the lure without be scared away. Suspending lures also are great for acting like a stunned baitfish being controlled by the current and pausing in the eddy where hungry trout wait for food.

Floating Minnows: Widely available in the USA but, many that are available do not fish well in streams. They are either too light or, their shape causes them to spin in the fast current. Lures like the Dr. Minnow by Daiwa are a great option to fish floating lures. Floating lures can fish fished very slow as a topwater popper or wakebait and also aggressively in a fast twitching motion. Often overlooked because they do not cast as far as the heavier lures, floating lures can produce bites when sinking and suspending lures cannot.
