Tens of thousands of travellers are dealing with delays and disruptions after WestJet engineers walked off the job Friday night.

WestJet engineers went on strike just a day after Labour Minister Seamus O’regan directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration in order to solve outstanding issues between the union and the airline.

Aviation experts say wages are the sticking point in these negotiations.

Global Aviation Leadership Director, John Gradek says, “It boggles my mind, it’s going to cost WestJet millions in terms of lost profitability the trade-off between settling with the union and doing all these out-of-pocket costs tells me this is going to be a very very short strike.”

“In addition, Toronto airport screeners rejected a tentative deal on Friday meaning another strike is still on the table which could cause even more chaos for countless travellers.
