Salve Mater was once a psychiatric institution for women. The institution was located in a huge park of 35 hectares, owned by a noble family. The last two heirs of this family, J.D.S. (1766-1838) and M.D.S. (1802-1873) were very interested in plants and trees. The park still contains extremely rare plant and tree species.

In 1915, the heirs of this family donated the park to the local Catholic University, which in turn gave it to the Sisters of Charity. They finally decided to build an institution for mentally ill women.

On June 29, 1927, the first 2 buildings, namely the administration and the building "Sacta Maria" were solemnly inaugurated. Several important people were present at the opening of these buildings, such as Queen Elisabeth and numerous political, ecclesiastical and university dignitaries. There was also an important speech on the new forms of the 'Care and healing of the insane'. A big step in the history of psychiatric institutions.

Over the years, various buildings were added and Salve Mater became one of the largest psychiatric institutions in Flanders. The main building was home to the Sisters' administration and convent until 1996. In 2003, the building acquired a new owner, photographer P.B. . The other buildings on the domain have all been emptied step by step, and the last patients left the domain in 2007.

The old buildings have almost all found a new destination. Largely homes have moved on from the once large institution. The building we visited is therefore one of the last buildings that are still empty, but it will not be long before every piece of building on the domain will be put back into use. The large Salve Mater park, on the other hand, has been recognized as a village scene since 1994 and classified in the monuments and landscapes because of the rich collection of trees and plants.
