“Beyond the Lights” is an independent romantic drama film and the third feature written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film initially premiered at TIFF on September 7, 2014 and was released theatrically on November 14, 2014 by Relativity Media. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Machine Gun Kelly, Danny Glover and more. It was based on the Nina Simone song "Blackbird" as well as Gina's relationship with her biological mother, whom she met in her 20s, and how she imagined their lives would’ve been if she hadn’t been put up for adoption. It was also loosely inspired by the lives of Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland & the careers of Alicia Keys & more. The film struggled to secure financing due to studios' resistance to having two black romantic leads. Sony Pictures eventually signed on to the film but ended up dropping out due to Gina’s insistence on casting relative newcomer Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the lead role. “Beyond The Lights” holds an approval rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its writing, direction, the performances of its two leads and the fact that all of the key crew members on the film were women. It received several nominations at the Black Reel Awards along with nominations and wins from various other ceremonies and festivals as well as a nomination for Best Original Song at the 87th Oscars for “Grateful” written by Diane Warren and performed by Rita Ora.
