In this video, I talk about general tips for writing a strong statement of purpose that can be applied regardless of what program/field you are applying to. I provide a general outline that you can use to write your own statement--one that you can modify as you see fit. I discuss what should be in a statement of purpose and give examples from my own statement of purpose as I go through the outline.

The second half of the video is a set of general tips ranging from how to find what to write to tips for editing and improving the quality of your writing.

Here are some additional resources you may find useful:

.edu sites are from colleges and they may have reviewed many statements so it helps to have an "insider" look at what makes a strong statement

Don't feel discouraged reading these statements and compare them to your first draft thinking your writing is nowhere near the level of these works. Of course your drafts aren't as good because these are final products--they are the crystallization of hours upon hours of thinking and writing, editing, etc. For many of these essays, these writers have gotten feedback from strong, if not professional writers. I'm confident that when they started out, they were all over the place, with ideas and examples that weren't relevant.
