With Season 5 of Shokugeki no Soma back, a lot of emotions stirred up in me. My feelings about the manga, my feelings about Season 3, and my general nostalgia for one of the first anime series I ever watched. And due to that nostalgia, I needed to know whether the first season of Shokugeki was actually well-directed, or if I had been befuddled by high impact moments, a compelling storyline, and a truly executed soundtrack. Here's a discussion of panning, adaptation and more!

Footnotes:
[1] - 3:10 - There is a frequent question that arises where we ask ourselves, “What do we attribute to writing vs. What do we attribute to direction” when it comes to certain elements especially if we don’t have a script or screenplay. We know that the idea for a montage at the beginning of Sangatsu no Lion is something we attribute to the direction because we have the “script/storyboards” in the form of the first chapter of the manga. But what about the appearance of the two celestial bodies and the rotation shot that follows in Gurren? Whether we attribute the idea to the writer or the director is unclear, but we can give the credit on the execution to the director, and that’s why I would say it’s a well directed sequence.

[2] - 8:33 - I don’t like the camera shake in these shots and the preceding ones. It feels very plug-in after the fact, and it goes on a bit too long for my tastes. It’s ANOTHER camera movement to prevent stillness and it’s truly unnecessary outside of a few shots in the sequence. You could argue though that it’s set-up for Soma’s scene afterwards.
