adapted from Sheila Burgel:
Passaic, New Jersey high school students Doris Coley, Micki Harris, Shirley Owens and Beverly Lee were playing around in gym class, singing a song, when their gym teacher scolded them for not paying attention to him--before insisting they enter the school talent show. They were so good, classmate Mary Jane Greenberg told her mother, Florence, who ran TIARA Records.
Initially resistant to recording, the girls finally gave in and cut the group-penned "I Met Him on a Sunday" for Greenberg in 1958. It was a relative hit, along with "Dedicated to the One I Love" and "Tonight's the Night", which were released in '59 and '60 respectively.
But it wasn't until the gorgeous "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", released in 1960, that a girl group record charted #1 for the first time, setting off a musical phenomenon ruled by teenaged girls.
