Volkswagen has recently revealed details about the latest iteration of the VW Golf R. The German automaker used the World Wide Web to disclose many of the vehicle's specifications, including power numbers, acceleration time, and other significant aspects.

Despite this extensive information, it is not an official unveiling, as Volkswagen has not yet fully revealed the new Golf R. However, they have announced how powerful the car is, how quickly it can reach sixty-two miles per hour, and what changes have been made to its design and performance.

The most exciting update for enthusiasts is the powertrain. The facelifted 2025 VW Golf R retains the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, now producing 329 horsepower and 310 pound-foot of torque. This marks an increase of 14 horsepower and 15 pound-foot of torque compared to the previous model.

A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission delivers power to the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. This is the only transmission available, as the manual gearbox has been discontinued for this mid-cycle refresh. According to Volkswagen, the updated all-wheel-drive hot hatch can sprint from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, while the sporty station wagon version is two-tenths of a second slower. The top speed has also increased from 155 to 168 miles per hour with the optional Performance Package.

These specifications pertain to the European model, as details regarding the version for the United States market (hatchback only) have not been released. The outgoing 2024 Golf R starts at $45,665 before destination charges, accelerates from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, and offers a choice between a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with 315 horsepower and 295 pound-foot of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

The refreshed Golf R retains its playful character with the drift mode, which allows for rear-wheel-drive fun. The braking system remains unchanged, and the 2025 model sits one inch lower than its predecessor. It features a revised chassis setup and comes with adaptive suspension as standard. Additional updates include refreshed front and rear fascias, along with other improvements across the Golf Mk8.5 family.

The official unveiling of the 2025 Volkswagen Golf R in both body styles is scheduled for June 26, with orders expected to open later this summer. Unfortunately, the station wagon version will not be available in the United States market, which is disappointing as it would have added a unique option in the compact class.
