Twigs can be a good source of emergency fuel if you happen to have a twig stove or a wood gas stove. The nice thing about twigs is that twigs are very common easily available in many parts of the world. In fact, twigs are often seen as a waste product, to be thrown out or discarded. If you know how to use a twig stove or a wood gas stove, twigs can provide an almost limitless source of fuel for cooking. It’s difficult to cook over an open fire using twigs, because they burn up so quickly. However, if you are using a highly efficient wood gas stove it is possible to cook using twigs.

Twig Snapping Techniques

The twigs have to be broken small in order to be used in a twig stove or in a wood gas stove. It’s easy to break a small handful of twigs. However, your knee might get sore if you are breaking twigs for hours and hours. These techniques make breaking twigs more efficient and comfortable. It’s nice to know how to process lots of twigs in case you ever need to know how to do it.

Fuel Must Be Dry To Burn Efficiently

Twigs have to be dry and dead before they can be burned. The twig has to snap. Green twigs or damp or wet or damp dead wood doesn’t burn well. To get a good burn, your fuel has to be dry. Twigs lying on the ground are sometimes quite damp, and they don’t burn well. This type of fuel sometimes has to be dried out before it will burn well.

Storage Solutions

One solution is to break all the twigs and then put them into some kind of a container. The container is stored indoors, say in a garage or in a shed. The lid is not put on the container in order to allow the wood to dry out. Over time, the wood will dry out and become very dry, making it perfect for fuel. A possible container is a garbage can. It is possible to disguise the sticks by putting some paper garbage or something similar on top of the fuel.

Safety Gear

I use safety glasses when I am using these techniques. The reason is that when you hit the twigs with a brick hammer it is possible for the wood to fly through the air and hit you in the face. Something similar can also happen when you are chopping wood. Due to these reasons, it is often a good idea to wear safety glasses when processing wood. Another suggestion would be to wear leather safety gloves.

If you are using a wood gas stove, it takes a surprisingly small amount of twigs to cook a meal. The advantage of twigs is that they are often readily available. There are lots of twigs in a forest. People are often looking to throw branches when a tree is cut down. Almost no one places any value on twigs—until you realize that they are potential emergency survival fuel. People often pay to have tree branches removed from their property.

Why I Like Wood Gas Stoves For Cooking

If you are living in a well populated area like a city, there’s often the fuel problem. The question is, if I need to use a cooking stove for a long period of time, such as a natural disaster, what fuel can I store on my property to fuel the stove? Food has to be cooked and cooking requires fuel. The reason a wood gas stove is useful in certain circumstances is because it is highly efficient, it is almost smokeless and the fuel is wood. This means you can get a flame similar to a gas flame, but the fuel is wood instead of gas. There are often regulations preventing people from storing 20 propane canisters on a small suburban property. Storing wood is usually perfectly legal. Wood is readily available and, unlike a fuel like propane, wood is non-explosive and it is safe to store lots of wood on a property. Furniture is also made of wood, decks are made of wood, even the house is often made of wood. Correspondingly, nobody cares if there’s lots of wood on a property. Wood pellets also work really well in a wood gas stove. A woodstove requires much more fuel than a wood gas stove and they produce quite a lot of smoke. In some suburban settings it is not possible to install a woodstove. Wood gas stoves are also very small, which makes storing them very practical. It is also possible to make a DIY wood gas stove out of tin cans using a few simple hand tools.
