The temple is considered one of India's greatest monuments and an engineering marvel, covering twice the area of the Parthenon in Athens and being half as high again. It features intricate panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the adventures of Krishna, as well as grand-scale relief and free-standing sculptures. The temple's architecture shows traces of Pallava and Chalukya styles.
Although inscriptions attribute the temple's construction to Krishna I, some academics believe that work may have continued under succeeding kings for more than a century. Archaeologists have calculated that it would have taken over a hundred years to finish the temple, but it was actually completed in 18 years. The temple was originally named Krishneshvara after Krishna I, but is now known as Kailasa.
