This gyrocopter crash occured at Erskine Park in the mid 1990's. The pilot was uninjured, he went to the hospital for a checkup and came back and disassembled the machine and took it home.

The 2 guys practicing were only learning, so doing lengths of the strip on the ground as there was no instructor on site... Our friend in the VW Hummingbird gyro went a bit far and got airborne... I was looking for him in the viewfinder, but he wasn't on the ground where I expected, I could hear the machine but couldn't get it in the shot right away....so I just caught the accident as the rotors hit the ground.

Luckily he was ok, he went on to manufacture rotorblades.

This was how we learned back in the day, doing lengths of the strip... faster and faster until enough skills had been gained to fly lengths of the strip. Unfortunately, due to getting airborne before having the skills to do so... and the very basic (and really unsuitable) tail, it was difficult for a beginner to be able to control at such slow speed and little air blast over the tail.

Please like, share and subscribe and all that... so you can catch more videos as I upload them ... there are more to come.

The footage was taken by me but the machines belonged other members of the Erskine Park group. Please feel free to comment
