In Hawaii, we value family, or ohana. And as we are expecting our second child soon, I've been thinking a lot about what our family values will be. As a local family, I think it's important to continue the family values that have been passed down from my local roots and my wife's Japanese background. About a year ago, I saw a sign at a local farmers market and decided to buy it. It’s from Gifts By The Sea, a local Hawaii business that specializes in Hawaii signs. What I love about this sign is that it describes, in our own little Hawaii way, certain family values that we strive to uphold. We’re not always perfect, but we try.
So I wanted to briefly unpack and explain what these eleven ohana rules or values mean to me because while not a complete list of all of the values I’d like to uphold for my family, it’s a great starting point.
