Today we are talking Steelhead Fishing With Beads. This is a great tutorial for beginners looking to get into bead fishing for steelhead. This first video is a beginners guide to fishing with beads and how to fish with beads specifically for Steelhead and Salmon (this rig will also work for trout)
We will cover questions like What kind of rod to use for bead fishing, What kind of reel to use for bead fishing, as well as setting up this bead fishing rig from top to bottom, covering bobber stops, bobbers, weights, swivels, soft beads, hard beads, heavy beads, leader types and lengths, etc. At the end of the video we will quickly cover how to fish beads for steelhead and salmon and also you will find some helpful steelhead fishing tips.

I have used this bead setup here on our local rivers (Sandy River, Clackamas River) as well as our coastal tributaries, and in my opinion, it is probably one of the best fishing rigs out there. Not only is it pretty straight forward, but there are a lot of options that enable you to tweak this set up to more of your liking.

This bead fishing 101 video is directed towards those that are new to this style of fishing or for those who are just maybe looking for some new or different information to help them better their own technique.

I WILL GET SOME LINKS UP HERE ASAP (9/2/20)

ROD - SIZE/LENGHTH:
of rod for this technique is typically between 9'6" and 10'6"
This isn't required but it will better help you fish this rig more effectively and allow you to mend your line, ultimately keeping a better straighter line from your rod tip to bobber.

REEL:
When it comes to reels I usually stick with a size 40. (Most reels now show you how much braided line can be spooled) A bigger size will carry enough line to handle a fish that may take long runs, theres nothing worse than not having enough line.

LINE:
With this bead fishing setup I am usually using a High-vis Yellow braided line by P-Line
and my leader choices are typically a fluorocarbon, ranging from 8lb - 15lb

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS RIG:

Bobber Stop - two 4mm beads - Torpedo Float - 3 way swivel - Weight (slinky, ball, lead, inline, etc) a bead ranging in size from 6mm - 14mm,  Hook (#2 or #4) and something to peg your bead. (I use Wedgies)

Check out the video for directions, tips, different options, and how to fish with beads.

Though I am a fan of the hard bead, I am quickly learning to love the soft bead, something about it's presentation just seems a step better than most hard beads. My recommendation will always be to have a selection if possible. Having different options for bead sizes, colors, and types can be a game changer and quickly turning a slow day into a very productive one.

When I fish with beads, I prefer to approach the section of river that I am going to fish and I basically fish it in a grid pattern, starting close and working my way out further into the river, adjusting my bobber depth along the way.
For those who are new to steelhead fishing with beads, my recommendation would be to start by setting your bobber stop short and making a cast, if you are not tapping along the bottom, reel in, adjust your bobber stop a bit more and recast, repeat this until you can tell that your weight is tapping along the bottom, which will be indicated by the action on your bobber.
I ALWAYS recommend using scent, whether fishing with beads, spinners, spoons, plastics, jigs, etc. ANYTHING that may help improve your chance of catching a fish is always a plus. There are plenty of options out there, just experiment until you find what you think is working.

I hope this video helps those of you who needed it and there are more tutorials on the way.
I will be out fishing for steelhead on the Clackamas River and Sandy River a lot this season, so if you happen to see me, feel free to say hello. I always enjoy running into viewers.
