Vravrona is located on the south coast of Attica in the bay of Vraona which is crossed by the small river Erasinos. On the hill where this settlement was located was built the sanctuary of Byronia Artemis which is one of the oldest and most revered sanctuaries of Attica. The sanctuary of the goddess and the surrounding area are the Archaeological Site of Vravrona. Vravrona was one of the 12 ancient cities of Attica and was named after the hero Vravronas. The natural bay of Vravrona was the main reason for the first settlement of people already in the Neolithic and mainly in the early Helladic years (3500 - 2000 BC), as its favorable position ensured communication with the islands of the Cyclades and Central Asia.

Η Βραυρώνα βρίσκεται στη νότια ακτή της Αττικής στον κολπίσκο της Βραώνας που διασχίζεται από τον μικρό ποταμό Εράσινο. Στο λόφο όπου βρισκόταν αυτός ο οικισμός ήταν κτισμένο το ιερό της Βαυρωνίας Αρτέμιδος που αποτελεί ένα απο τα αρχαιότερα και πιο σεβάσμια ιερά της Αττικής. Το ιερό της θεάς και ο γύρω χώρος αποτελουν τον Αρχαιολογικό Χώρο της Βραυρώνας. Η Βραυρώνα ήταν μια από τις 12 αρχαίες πόλεις της Αττικής και ονομάστηκε έτσι από τον ήρωα Βραύρωνα.
Ο φυσικός όρμος της Βραυρώνας στάθηκε η βασική αιτία για την πρώτη εγκατάσταση ανθρώπων ήδη στα νεολιθικά και κυρίως στα πρωτοελλαδικά χρόνια (3500 - 2000 π.Χ.), καθώς η ευνοϊκή του θέση εξασφάλιζε επικοινωνία με τα νησιά των Κυκλάδων και τη Μ. Ασία.
