Summary of the Novena video:
The First Sorrow of Mary is the Prophecy of Simeon. When Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple according to the Jewish custom, they encounter Simeon, a man whom God promised would not die without first laying his eyes on the Savior. Simeon was elated when Jesus arrived and heaped praise on God for this great gift. Mary must have had a heart full of joy in that moment until Simeon’s words took a sudden turn:

And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through you own soul also), so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:33-36)

The Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the 7 sorrows of Mary. The first Sorrow of Mary, is known as the Prophecy of Simeon. When Mary and Joseph followed the Jewish custom and brought Jesus to the temple, they encountered Simeon, a man who had received God's promise that he would not pass away before beholding the Savior. Simeon's heart brimmed with joy as he witnessed the arrival of Jesus, and he lavished praise upon God for this remarkable blessing. But Mary’s heart is filled with sorrow.

In the first of the 7 Sorrows of Mary (also known as Our Lady of Dolours), our key scripture comes from Luke 2:33-36
And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through you own soul also), so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

Regarding this first Sorrow of Mary, the holy Virgin herself said to St. Matilda, that at the announcement of St. Simeon all her joy was changed into sorrow. For, as it was revealed to St. Theresa, the blessed mother, although she knew before this that the life of her Son would be sacrificed for the salvation of the world, yet she then learned more particularly and distinctly the sufferings and cruel death that awaited her poor Son. She knew that he would be contradicted in all things.
