शंकर, अपनी बहन के सम्मान की रक्षा के लिए एक साथी साथी को मार डालता है। वह अपने अगले दस साल उस बात के लिए जेल में बिताता है जिसे उसका परिवार छुपाता है और सभी को बताता है कि वह अफ्रीका में है। अपनी सजा के बाद वह एक दुकान में पार्सल के आदान-प्रदान के कारण शोभा से मिलता है, बाद में वह शोभा और उसकी माँ से मिलता है जिसे वह जहाज से दुर्घटनावश गिरने के कारण डूबने से बचाता है, वह अब शंकर को एक बेटे की तरह मानती है। वह लौटता है और उषा और बड़ी हो चुकी बहन आशा से मिलता है। उषा की शादी रमेश से हुई है और उसके दो बच्चे हैं, शंकर की कैद का पता चलने पर आशा की शादी टूट जाती है। उसे शोभा द्वारा आत्महत्या करने से बचाया जाता है, जो उससे प्यार करती है और उसे अपने साथ ले जाती है, शोभा की माँ उनकी शादी को मंजूरी दे देती है। जब सच्चाई सामने आती है कि जिस साथी साथी को उसने गलती से मार डाला वह वास्तव में शोभा का भाई था, तो शंकर ने शोभा की मां के सामने सच्चाई कबूल कर ली, जो उसे अपने बेटे की हत्या के लिए डांटती थी। लेकिन जेलर ने उसे शंकर को माफ करने के लिए मना लिया क्योंकि उसने जेल में बिताए सभी वर्षों के लिए पश्चाताप किया है।

Shanker, kills a fellow mate to protect his sister's honour. He spends his next ten years in prison for that which his family hides and tells everyone that he is in Africa. After his sentence he meets Shobha due to exchange of parcels in a shop, Later he meets Shobha and her mother whom he saves from drowning due an accidental fall from the ship, she now treats Shankar as a son. He returns and meets Usha and grown up sister Asha. Usha is married to Ramesh and has two children, Asha's marriage is broken when Shankar's imprisonment is revealed. He is saved from committing suicide by Shobha, who loves him and takes him along, Shobha's mother approves of their marriage. When the truth is revealed that the fellow mate he killed accidentally was actually Shobha's brother, Shankar confesses the truth to Shobha's mother, who rebukes him for killing her son. But the jailer convinces her to forgive Shankar as he has repented for all the years spent in jail.
