In the Spring of 1864 the Union Army's new commander Ulysses S. Grant had Robert E. Lee and his Confederates on the run. The North had suffered incredible losses, but they could afford them. Lee's losses, however, were irreplaceable--and Grant knew it. Grant felt he could bleed the south dry in a matter of months, while Lee hoped to destroy Grant's army in pieces, one corps at a time.
