A celebration of life! To memorialize Clarence Avant at the Grammys during black history month was a great honor. He was known to generations as “The Godfather of Black Music” and was the kind of behind-the-scenes legend who made other legends happen – in music, in politics and beyond. If you knew Clarence, you knew he had a glass of Pinot noir every night. I poured one last glass for him sitting atop the piano. He was a trusted mentor to Bill Withers so in honor I sang “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean On Me”. When the choir drops in the room shook!!

The performance then shifted into a celebratory remembrance for all those we lost last year, including my cousin Russell Batiste Jr. ♥️ We prayed, we cried, we sung and we danced onstage at the Grammys. The joy of living is still available to us! Cue Ann Nesby, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (bucket list moment for me!) for “Optimistic” 🙌🏾 This song is a staple in black homes for generations and one of my top 5 songs of all time. I loved arranging this one and having Ann come and bless us with her voice.
