Growing up in South Los Angeles, GaTa was adopted by an aunt he thought of as his mother after being placed in foster care. He never got to know either of his parents. He started rapping while a student at Audubon Middle School, getting his start from the artist Da Brat. GaTa performed as a hype guy for rappers like Lil Wayne and Gym Class Heroes while touring the globe. The music company G.E.D. was founded by Tyga and his boyhood friend Schoolboy Q. According to GaTa, the name stands for "grinding every day, getting every dollar, getting educated daily." Approximately in 2013, GaTa started collaborating with David Burd, better known by his stage as Lil Dicky, who would go on to become a close friend and co-star on the comedy-drama Dave. He proceeded to develop his own budding solo rap career after becoming well-known as an actor, releasing the single "Check Up" in July 2021. GaTa made his acting debut in the FXX TV series Dave, where he portrays Davionate "Dave" Ganter, a genuine but "heightened" version of himself. He had to audition for the role of himself on the show because he had never performed in anything other than music videos or taken acting training. Because of the positive reviews for his portrayal, numerous critics felt he should have been nominated for an Emmy.
GaTa and Lil Dicky are great friends, therefore it only seems sense to talk about how they first got together. Through an ex-manager, the two got together just before Lil Dicky's debut tour, and they have been practically together ever since. Burd claims he was surprised by how much he sensed GaTa understood him as a rapper after their initial meeting. GaTa, who has collaborated with Lil Wayne and Tyga, was taken aback by Lil Dicky's frankness, especially in the ultra-masculine world of rap. He acknowledges that this has given him permission to be open and honest about his own struggles, including his bipolar disorder. "There he was rapping about having this small penis and all his girl issues, where most rappers are talking about getting laid by four or five chicks a night," he says. GaTa even gave permission for the latter to be shown in "Hype Man," one of the year's most highly praised and impactful episodes from season one.
