Penrhyn Castle – North Wales – Fantasy Castle, Railway Museum, Abby & Gardens – Virtual Walking Tour

Still in North Wales, today I’m visiting Penrhyn Castle near Bangor on the coast near to Anglesey.

This video virtual walking tour takes us on a trip around the castle, inside some of the rooms, the railway museum, gardens and ends by the derelict Abby.

It’s a warm but slightly overcast day, but at least it’s dry.

The Castle is what’s called a Folly or Fantasy Castle, reconstructed on the site of a Medieval Fortified Manor House, in the 1780’s in a Neo Norman style. Designed by Thomas Hopper for the Pennant family when they returned from Jamacia. Sadly, the castle has a dark history connected with the sugar and slave trade.
Sitting on 40,000 acres (160 km2) it was placed in the care of the National Trust in 1951.
After walking the outside of the castle, we get to see some of the inside structures, stunning glass windows and rooms open to the public.

Moving outside to the small railway museum inside the once stable block, we glimpse the connection to Penrhyn Quarry and the development of the narrow-gauge railway for industrial use.

The gardens take us through meadow and woodland, where we end our visit at the derelict Abby, which again is another Folly, placed to give the gardens a Victorian romantic gothic feel, very popular at the time.
