Garry Kasparov famously said, “Strong chess players realize patterns and can immediately see opportunities... At the end of the day it’s about the number of positions – or you may say number of patterns – he or she can recognize.”

If you are familiar with a chess tactical pattern, such as the Greek Gift Sacrifice, it becomes very easy and natural for you to consider the move Bxh7+ in that position.

On the other hand, if you've never seen that tactical pattern before, then even recognizing the idea of sacrificing your bishop on h7 is difficult, let alone calculating all the possible variations.

The problem is, in chess, there are so many tactical patterns. Trying to learn, memorize, and apply all of them in your games can be overwhelming.

Good news! Most of these patterns are either very rare or so advanced that you might never encounter them unless you're a top-level GM.

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will teach you the top 10 most common chess tactical patterns that you must know to reach a 2000 ELO rating and above.
