With excitement building around the possibility of Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton making Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024, we sat down with another young star ushering in a new era of English midfield talent: Middlesbrough academy graduate Hayden Hackney.

Handed his senior debut by Neil Warnock in 2021, Hackney established himself as a fixture at the Riverside Stadium under Michael Carrick, and after an incredibly impressive 2022-23 campaign a brilliant goal against Chelsea in this year's EFL Cup semi-final made him known to fans outside the Championship.

We spoke to Hayden about growing up as a Middlesbrough fan, watching Cristiano Ronaldo, becoming part of the England under-21 set-up and scoring in front of the stand he once occupied with his friends.
