Maddy's condition: Type 1 diabetes and microalbuminuria
A1c: 6.0% → 5.6%
Fasting blood glucose: 160 mg/dL → 88 mg/dL
Microalbumin level: 566 mcg/mg creatinine → 12 mcg/mg creatinine
Carbohydrate ratio: 10:1 → 20:1

Urine microalbumin is a diabetes biomarker that doesn’t catch a lot of media attention. But it's an important indicator of kidney function.

What is microalbumin? Microalbumin is a protein the body uses for tissue growth and repair. When the kidneys aren’t functioning optimally, microalbumin leaks into the urine.

A normal microalbumin level on a random test is less than 30 mcg per mg of creatinine. A level of 300 mcg of microalbumin per mg of creatinine is known as microalbuminuria, and a level higher than 300 mcg per mg of creatinine is called clinical microalbuminuria.

Maddy had been diagnosed with clinical microalbuminuria for two years, and her doctor’s only advice was to just take her insulin and use her Dexcom (continuous glucose monitor).

Her microalbuminuria was only getting worse, despite following her doctor’s advice and keeping her A1c in an acceptable range.

Then Maddy found out about the Mastering Diabetes Method and decided to gradually transition to a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet.

And the rest is an incredible story about taking back control of one's health while living with health conditions. Check out Maddy's inspiring story in this video. And don't miss the part where she improved her insulin sensitivity with whole-food carbohydrates.
