Off-roading in the snow, or snow wheeling, is a fun winter weather activity that can make for a great day on the trails for enthusiasts of any level. Whether you’re a total beginner, or an expert off-roader with tons of trail time under your belt, wheeling in the snow can pose new challenges if you’re not prepared for it.

In this episode of Chasing Dust, our host, Matt Moghaddam, takes us to the snow-capped peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains, just behind Big Bear, California for a few beginner tips and tricks to make your next winter 4WD adventure a fun and successful one.

But BEFORE you go, you need to have an off-road DIY tool kit:    • DIY Off-Road Tool Kit | Chasing Dust

Using your 4x4 for off-roading in snow isn’t as easy as hopping in and heading out on the trail. Matt breaks down a list of essential gear you’ll need to bring with you, including a shovel, recovery equipment, and a winch.

Additionally, Matt goes over the different types of suitable tires your 4x4 should have for off-roading in the snow. The Nitto Ridge Grapplers on Matt’s Ford Ranger are a great example of Nitto’s off-road ready tires that can take on any element, including fresh powder.

Beginners who wish to use their 4WD in the snow should know how to properly air down and inflate their tires for snow, and the best pressure to gain the maximum traction needed for snow wheeling.

Lastly, Matt gives you five driving techniques for beginners to keep in mind when using 4WD in snow. Learn when to use 4WD high or low, how to use your brakes, steering, and throttle, and how to properly space out on the trails to avoid possible collisions. These tips will help keep you and your rig safe, while still making for a fun day of driving through a winter wonderland.

If you’re a beginner to snow wheeling, and looking for a great guide to get started, you definitely don’t want to miss this episode of Driving Line’s Chasing Dust. Happy wheeling!
