We start the day flanking Gijón's San Lorenzo beach along its Paseo del Muro to its western end, where we go up the Cerro Santa Catalina to reach Eduardo Chillida's work Elogio del Horizonte (In Praise of the Horizon).

We then descend to leave the Marina and Poniente Beach behind us and leave Gijón along Galicia and Argentina Avenues.

Asphalt and metallurgical industry spoil the stretch that will lead us to the ascent of Monte Areo. In this relief, the road improves through a countryside environment and small urban centres, although the rain will then take centre stage.

Soaking wet, we walk through the places of Santa Eulalia, Tamón and Tabaza. In the latter we have lunch and wait for the weather conditions to improve.

New stretches of asphalt, some of them compromised by traffic, take us to the outskirts of Avilés, where the steel industry is once again making its presence felt.

The surroundings are sweetened by a river walk along the Ría de Avilés, which at times distracts us from the metal that surrounds us thanks to its gallery forest, birdlife and sculptural works made of steel.
