In this brand new original series, KRK asks Jacquire King for answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions from recording neophytes and veterans alike, and to provide priceless tips and tricks from behind the scenes of the record-making process.

In this episode of "Sound Advice With Jacquire King," Grammy Award-winning producer, engineer, and mixer Jacquire King talks about making rough mixes. What is a rough mix, and what is its purpose? They allow you to check how things sound when you're away from the studio, and how the recording translates and comes across on other playback systems. Jacquire goes into the details and talks about how they're also useful as a reference for people who are writing lyrics and learning or writing new parts for the recording. He also discusses their value as a reference point for the recordist and producer that provides perspective on the various stages of the recording process. Rough mixes help you to keep track of what still needs to be done. Jacquire also talks about their contributions to the final mix. If the rough mix is already pretty good, there is no need to reinvent the wheel - build upon it and refine it to get to a completed final mix.
