Many people who undergo echocardiography are told they have mild mitral regurgitation i.e a mildly leaky mitral valve and this causes a lot of anxiety and concern for the patient.

70% of the population has some mitral regurgitation (physiological mitral regurgitation) this is harmless
Primary mitral regurgitation is when there is some anatomical fault with the mitral valve or the apparatus
Secondary mitral regurgitation is when there is a fault with the left ventricle.
