A stretch of northbound State Route 529 at Marine View Drive in Everett was closed for several hours Tuesday due to a large hole that formed on the road from someone tunneling underneath the roadway.
Road crews found the damage around 7 a.m. and were forced to perform emergency maintenance near the Steamboat Slough Bridge to repair the damage, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The hole was about 1 foot by 1 foot wide on the surface, but below it was 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep, according to the WSDOT. A WSDOT official said the hole is more similar to a cave than a tunnel, and they were unsure if someone was living inside.
